They come in an incredible variety of colors and patterns, from bright oranges, greens, and yellows to deep blues, reds, and multicolored varieties.

They’re also a great coral for both newer reef keepers and experienced hobbyists. Once they’re happy and settled in, Zoas can grow across your rockwork and develop into some seriously impressive colonies.

Zoanthids are closely related to Palythoa, or Palys. Some Zoas and Palys can contain palytoxin, so always handle them carefully. We recommend gloves and eye protection anytime you’re handling or fragging them, and they should never be boiled or exposed to high heat.

Where They Come From

Zoanthids can be found throughout tropical reef environments around the world, with many varieties coming from the Indo-Pacific.

In the wild, you’ll usually find them growing on rocks, reef rubble, and other hard surfaces.
